The Dream Stream and Eleven Mile Canyon sit on opposite sides of a reservoir. Cheesman Canyon involves a trail approach, while Deckers has designated public fishing stops along the road. Choosing where to fish the South Platte starts with those differences, because the access, reports, and fishing rules change as you move between reaches.

I’ve spent 15 years working as a professional fly fishing guide. For a first South Platte trip, choose the amount of walking that suits your day, then plan around one section. Sorting out the access before you leave gives you more time to fish once you get there.

Quick Answer: For South Platte River fly fishing, compare the Dream Stream, Eleven Mile Canyon, Cheesman Canyon, and Deckers before choosing a reach. Plan for the Gill Trail at Cheesman and designated public access around Deckers. Match the exact regulation boundaries and current fishing report to the water you select.

Dream Stream Notice, Checked October 10, 2026: Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists an October 7 end date for the Dream Stream’s voluntary noon-to-midnight fishing closure. That afternoon restriction is no longer listed as ongoing. Portions of the river may still close as posted for kokanee spawning operations, so check the current CPW fishing closures and signs at your access point before fishing.

The Colorado river directory puts the South Platte alongside the state’s other rivers. Use the broader Colorado fishing guide for wider trip planning, or compare other states in our US river guide.

Fish Above Or Below Eleven Mile Reservoir

Put Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Eleven Mile Reservoir on your map first. The Dream Stream lies between them, while Eleven Mile Canyon starts below Eleven Mile Dam. Saving the correct access point now helps you avoid arriving on the wrong side of the reservoir with a report for different water.

The Dream Stream: Spinney To Eleven Mile

The Dream Stream runs from the Spinney Mountain Reservoir outlet to the Eleven Mile Reservoir inlet. When you open a report or ask a shop about conditions, use those names. A recommendation for below Eleven Mile Dam belongs to the canyon section farther downstream.

From outlet to inlet, the rule is artificial flies and lures only, and all fish caught must be returned to the water immediately. Portions may also close as posted between September 15 and December 31 for kokanee spawning operations. Read the signs at your access point before choosing a stretch of bank.

Eleven Mile Canyon: Below The Dam

For Eleven Mile Canyon, keep the legal endpoint in mind: the artificial-flies-and-lures-only, trout-release section runs from immediately below Eleven Mile Dam downstream to the Wagon Tongue Gulch Road bridge at Springer Gulch. Avoid treating the whole canyon, or the whole South Platte, as one regulation area.

The Eleven Mile Canyon guide helps you place the access road and fishing area on a map. Locate the dam and Springer Gulch bridge before choosing a stop, then keep that map available while you follow the road through the canyon.

Read The Rules And Current Notices Together: The graphic below compares standing release rules. Also check current closures and posted signs; seasonal kokanee-spawning closures are separate from these release rules.

Both sections require artificial flies and lures, but the release wording is different: all fish on the Dream Stream, all trout in the specified canyon reach. Check the CPW special regulations alongside the signs at your access point.

Choose Your Access Below Cheesman Reservoir

Choose Cheesman when you have time for the Gill Trail and want the walk to be part of the outing. For a shorter visit, begin with the public access areas around Deckers. Allow for the approach when planning your day, especially if you have a fixed time to be back at the car.

Cheesman Canyon And The Gill Trail

The Cheesman Canyon trailhead is on County Road 126. The Gill Trail follows the South Platte through the canyon toward Cheesman Reservoir. Allow time for the approach and the return walk when deciding how much fishing you can fit into the day.

The canyon’s special-regulation reach runs from Cheesman Dam downstream to the upper Wigwam Club property line. Artificial flies and lures are required, and all trout must be returned to the water immediately. Use the named property boundary rather than the broad label “Cheesman” to identify where that rule applies.

For the walk, pack the items you need where you can reach them. If you’re buying waders for the trip, the Frogg Toggs Canyon II stockingfoot waders are one option in our wader guide. Check their fit with the footwear and clothing you’ll use before leaving.

Use the Colorado Mountain Club’s Gill Trail description to plan the route. Choose your turnaround point with the return walk in mind, and carry what you need for that outing rather than relying on a quick trip back to the car.

Deckers And The Lower Wigwam Boundary

For Deckers, start with the designated public river-access and parking areas. Denver Water’s river access information and the Deckers day-use guide can help you choose a stop. Enter at posted public access and stay within its boundaries.

From the lower Wigwam Club boundary downstream to Scraggy View Picnic Ground, fishing is restricted to artificial flies and lures. The trout bag and possession limit is two fish, with a minimum length of 16 inches. That is a different rule from the trout-release section upstream of the club.

Save the access map and the regulation entry together before leaving. The upper and lower Wigwam Club boundaries separate different regulation sections, so check which side you intend to fish. At the river, match the map to the posted boundary before moving along the bank.

Choose Flies For Your South Platte Reach

Small midges and blue-winged olives are useful starting points for the Dream Stream and Deckers in early October. Keep dry flies and subsurface patterns easy to find in your box, because your choice depends on where the fish are feeding. The following suggestions reflect conditions checked on October 10, 2026.

Fly rods, a reel, and an open fly box on a table

An SF slim fly box is one option covered in our fly box guide. Organize the flies you already own by family and size, with enough space to spot the small patterns. Check what is missing before buying more; a few suitable replacements are easier to keep track of than another mixed assortment.

For The Dream Stream: Start with Bling Midges in sizes 20 to 22 and Pheasant Tails in sizes 18 to 20. These are subsurface options to have ready alongside your dry flies.

For Deckers: A light dry-dropper setup suits the low, clear conditions described in the early October reports. Carry small midge and Baetis droppers, and watch for blue-winged olives bringing fish to the surface during cloudy periods.

I’d start by watching the section I can fish from the bank. If trout are rising, take time to see where those rises repeat before choosing a casting position. If there is no surface activity, give the subsurface options a proper try and pay attention to the drift before changing patterns.

The graphic shows two dry-fly examples: a BWO and a CDC Caddis. It helps with identification; select the pattern for the insects you see on your visit. For a later trip, refresh the Dream Stream fly choices or the Deckers fishing report before packing.

Check the location of any flow gauge against the dam and your access point. A reading from above Cheesman Reservoir describes different water from the release below Cheesman Dam. Use the gauge for your chosen reach, then read the access notices; one flow number cannot tell you whether a particular crossing is safe.

The same approach helps with the rod. Compare your existing outfit with the fishing you’ve chosen before replacing it; our trout fly rod guide covers the options. If you’re booking a guide, ask what they supply and what they want you to bring.

Where Is The Dream Stream?

The Dream Stream is the South Platte River from the outlet of Spinney Mountain Reservoir to the inlet of Eleven Mile Reservoir. It is above Eleven Mile Reservoir, while Eleven Mile Canyon begins below the dam.

Is The Dream Stream Under A Fishing Closure?

As checked October 10, 2026, CPW lists an October 7 end date for the Dream Stream’s voluntary noon-to-midnight fishing closure. Portions may still close as posted from September 15 through December 31 for kokanee spawning operations. Check CPW’s current closure list and signs at your access point before fishing.

Is The South Platte Catch-And-Release?

The rule depends on the reach. The Dream Stream requires release of all fish. The specified Eleven Mile Canyon and Cheesman Canyon sections require release of all trout. From the lower Wigwam Club boundary to Scraggy View Picnic Ground, the trout bag and possession limit is two fish, with a 16-inch minimum. All of these sections require artificial flies and lures.

Do You Have To Hike Into Cheesman Canyon?

Plan for the Gill Trail approach from the trailhead on County Road 126. The trail follows the South Platte through Cheesman Canyon toward Cheesman Reservoir. Include the return walk in your fishing-day plan.

Which South Platte Reach Suits A Short Visit?

I’d begin with a designated public access around Deckers and keep the plan to one stop. Cheesman adds a trail approach, so allow time for both the walk in and the return. Check current access notices and the exact fishing regulations before setting out.

Give One Stretch Enough Time

Give one stretch a proper outing on your first South Platte day. A confirmed public stop around Deckers suits a short visit, while Cheesman makes sense when you can allow for the Gill Trail in both directions. With your access, return time, and current notices sorted out, you can spend your attention on the fishing.

Pack the tackle you know, the flies selected for that reach, and the clothing you need for the day. If you need sunglasses, KastKing Skidaway polarized glasses are one option in our fishing sunglasses guide. Leave time to look at the water before making the first cast.

Born and raised in Billings, MT, Nic was blessed to be brought up in an outdoor-minded family. Fishing and hunting were a part of his familial culture. Blame it on my Aquarius birth or some divine design but, from as early as he can remember, he had to be near or in the water. Guiding since the early 2000s, Nic has thousands of hours of fly fishing and guiding experience and has helped hundreds of people get into the sport of fly fishing, or better their skills as anglers.
